Applicants

Ashford Housing Authority provides affordable income based rental housing opportunities to qualified individuals.  

Qualifications include:

  • 62 years of age or older.

  • Or handicapped/disabled as defined in section 223 of the Social Security Act.

  • Meet Ashford Housing screening criteria.

  • Must be citizens or have eligible immigration status at time of admission.

  • Meet income qualifications: below are the new income qualifications that have taken effect as of July 1, 2023.

Screening:

All applicants are subject to background screening including criminal background checks and landlord references.  All information provided on the application will be verified.

You may submit an application at any time!

Applications sent without supporting documents will not be accepted.

The waiting list opens up in January and July each year.

All applications must be submitted by mail, faxed, or dropped off to the Ashford Housing Authority during office hours. We do not accept applications electronically.

How long is the wait?

The average wait time is 24 months.

What is the difference between Affordable Senior Housing and a regular apartment?

Tenants in Senior Housing are generally looking for housing that is affordable, low maintenance, and stable where they can live for an extended period of time. Our longest resident has lived here 28 years.

CT Housing Search: There are a few ways to search the website

  • Go to “what can I afford”

    • Choose a County and click on “Calculate MFI then search ALL in (County)”

    • Answer the questions and then click “Go!” o Click on “See what’s available: $#### a month or less”

    • CTHousingSearch will generate a list of apartments you may qualify for. These results are likely to include apartments with subsidies available if you have lower income level.

  • Go to “find a place to rent” This will generate a list of all the apartments in the search area you request

Housing Choice Voucher Program: The Section 8 or Choice Voucher Program is run through the Town of Mansfield’s Housing Authority. Interested applicants should go to their website for more information. You can also go to http://www.cthcvp.org/ to see which lists are open and sign up for email notifications.

CT Fair Housing Center: CT Fair Housing’s mission is to ensure all people have access to housing. They can help with legal issues pertaining to discrimination and poverty, they provide education and outreach to help people understand their fair housing rights, and help with foreclosure prevention.

United Way 211 CT: You can call 211 or visit www.211ct.org for information and referral services related to health and human services.

Agent for the Elderly: this person works in conjunction with Commission on Aging to provide support for the Town’s elderly citizens. 211 Municipal Agents for the Elderly Search

Town Social Worker: This person can help with services and referrals for local, state, and federal social service programs. Check your local town hall for information.

Access Community Action Agency: Access works with low-income populations to help provide resources for food security, affordable housing, and jobs. They run a few senior housing programs in the area, including Parker Place in Tolland, Willington Woods, in Willington, Elisha Brook in Franklin, and Salem Village in Brooklyn. Windham Regional No Freeze Project: For those who are in immediate need of assistance, the No Freeze Project is a seasonal no freeze shelter November through April. They also offer a year-round hospitality center that offers access to help in getting housed as well as access to hygienic needs.
